What are the Cub Scout Ranks?

Check out this overview for more information.

    What are Achievements?

These are the required activities for a scout to earn his badge of rank. Requirements are different for every rank. Read your Cub's book, look at ScoutTrack, or check out the Links page to see what is required for advancement.

    What are Electives?

The purpose of electives is to encourage family/den/pack bonds through extra activities. They are earned at home and at den/pack/district functions. They are not required for rank advancement. Electives are different for every rank. Read your Cub's book, look at ScoutTrack, or check out the Links page to see what electives are available.

These are not awarded until the achievements for the rank are completed, although they can be worked on prior to rank completion. Tigers earn a Tiger Track bead for every 10 electives completed. Wolves and Bears earn a Gold Arrow Point for the first 10 electives and a Silver Arrow Point for each 10 electives thereafter. Electives should be recorded on ScoutTrack.

    What are Segments?

These are the little patches you sew on the back of the red vest. They are earned at home and at den/pack/district functions. They are not required for rank advancement. Tigers do not earn segments.

Each badge, pin, advancement, patch, or segment must be earned independently of any other award. For example, you cannot earn both the bowling belt loop and the bowling segment by going bowling one time; you will have to go bowling on separate occasions and each time earn one of the awards.

Each segment may be earned one time per scouting year. The scouting year is June 1 - May 31.

The purpose of segments is to encourage family/den/pack bonds through extra activities. Each segment should be purposefully earned. The Cub should be involved in choosing to work on a segment and feel as if he has accomplished something when the segment is received.

Give your den leader a list of segments earned by the end every month. They will be awarded at the following month's Pack meeting. If you don't have a list of possible segments, click here.

What is the difference between Rank Advancement and Graduation?

When boys complete all of the requirements for their rank, regardless of when in the scouting year that happens, they are awarded their badge of rank (Tiger, Wolf, etc.). From that point on, they can work on electives (Tiger Tracks or Arrow Points), belt loops, special awards, etc. They do not move up to the next rank immediately just because they have completed their rank requirements. Boys in the same den may get their badges at different times based on when they complete their requirements.

In our pack, all of our Scouts graduate to the next rank together at our graduation campout in May (although Webelos may bridge to Boy Scouts at another time). Boys move on to the next rank even if they cannot attend the campout and even if they did not complete all of the requirements for their rank (although they won't get their rank badge in the latter case). Once the boys graduate to the next rank, they cannot work on requirements or electives for the previous rank any longer.
