Questions about Cub Scout ActivitiesWhat is Klondike Derby? The Klondike Derby is the Scouts' version of winter olympics. Working in teams of 4 boys, generally divided by rank, the boys move from station to station to take part in a variety of winter events. In our District, the events generally include a compass course, an obstacle course, a sled pull relay, a snowshoe relay, a ski race, and an innertube race. After competing in each event, we have a break for lunch and some entertainment before the awards ceremony. Our Pack generally has a practice Klondike in January followed by the District event in early February. Back to Top What is the Blue and Gold Banquet? Most Cub Scouts celebrate Scouting Anniversary Week with a celebration called the Blue and Gold banquet. In nearly all packs, the annual Blue and Gold banquet, which is often the pack meeting for February, is the highlight of the year. It brings families together for an evening of fun and inspiration. The purpose of the Blue and Gold banquet is to celebrate the birthday of Scouting, recognize pack leaders and other adults who have been instrumental in the pack's success, and inspire the leaders, Scouts, and parents. Packs often like to invite former members and other Scouting or community leaders to take part in the annual Blue and Gold banquet. For our banquet, the Pack supplies the main dish and birthday cake for dessert. The rest of the meal is pot luck, with boys from each den providing a specific type of food (salad, pasta, etc). Pinewood Derby cars are small wooden models that boys make with help from their families and then race in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a regulation track. The Pinewood Derby is an annual event in most packs. It can be run indoors or outdoors. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race. Our Pinewood Derby is held each spring, and the Pack supplies the car kits for each Scout. This is a not-to-be-missed event! Generally, the Pack will provide one or more meals. Be sure to check the event information for details so you know what food and cooking gear you will need to pack. Bring your own camping gear, such as tents and sleeping bags. Pack clothing appropriate to the season and event activities (swimming suits, rain gear, hiking boots, etc). Be sure to remember your sun screen, bug spray, and a hat! Camping checklist Back to Top What should we pack for a backpacking trip? Here is a helpful checklist from ScoutMaster Dale.
